What the heck is Cribbage?

The Game

Cribbage is a card game using a decorative board and pegs to keep score. Like many card games, Cribbage is a back-and-forth between players between rounds of hands, with the dealer switching each hand. Cards are dealt, decided, played, and scored. Card combos that score points include pairs, runs, flushes, and of course, adding up to 15... oh and nobs ;)

The History

Reportedly created by Sir John Suckling in England in the 1600s, Cribbage is a take on a now less popular game called Noddy. The first rules seem to have been published in 1662, 1672, and 1674. Cribbage changed the scoring makeup from noddy is various ways, making it much more uniform. Some believe Cribbage was helped popularized by Charles Dickens' novel The Old Curiosity Shop.

The Love

So why does or club focus solely on this game? Simple. Family.

It is a more common story than you might think but ask a player when they started playing and they are likely to say, "I used to play with my grandparents". Cribbage is often a family game. Now, that's true for biological families, so our club aims to make that true and available for logical (chosen) families. Trust us when we say, it just hits differently.

More with Club 29

Meet the host!

Hi! I'm Tim and I have become "that Gay Cribbage Guy" and it's the best job title I've ever had. My cribbage story started when I was 7 at my grandparents' kitchen table. I started our Club nights in November of 2022 after seeing a friend's Instagram post of him and his boyfriend playing. Other millennial gays play cribbage? Who knew?! And thanks to the incredible people who come out each time I find the energy to keep doing more!
